The Culture Cards Co. is a studio that narrates global culture through design producing themed capsule collections featuring different travel destinations.
Evans founded the studio (formerly Editorial Plague) after returning from a yearlong adventure through Southeast Asia. He was so inspired by his experiences that he wanted to share it with the world the only way he knew how – through minimalist design. The result was the Ho Chi Minh playing card deck featuring Vietnam, which started on Kickstarter. Although they failed to reach the funding goal, they did receive many requests for the deck and so decided to print it anyway.
The Culture Cards Co's creative process is to choose a location and take note of the things that move them within a particular place. They usually focus on centres within a culture and the cuisine. They then condense the information into bite size statements for the deck before finally translating them into design. They focus on less usual destinations whose stories are not so well known. Collectively, the team have traveled to 15 countries and countless cities. This keeps things fresh because there is no telling what location they will feature next.
Currently, they are finalising a Czech Republic capsule featuring Prague with a Kickstarter project that is 95% funded with 8 days to go. It includes a designer deck, digital magazine, and limited tee shirt. The Culture Cards playing card decks work great as travel guides, gifts, or even party favours. Check them out here.
