Hayley Holden is a Designer and Maker based in Liverpool. Her work is inspired by fantasy, reality, world culture… and Harry Potter. Her gorgeous etchy, sketchy gift wrap caught my eye and now I want to know more about her designs, compositions and choice color palettes…
What’s your story? How did you get to where you are today? I fell into fashion design at College and then couldn’t decided if i wanted to study fashion or textiles at uni. So I took a course where you specialised later on in the course. It’s funny when I was at College I thought that print design would be a lame career path, turns out there are so many opportunities and different paths to take within this sector.
Which is your favourite design or print to date? To be honest I still love my castle print...
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? I have a terrible memory... I probably wanted to be a horse rider or a vet...
Which UNI did you go to and what did you study? I studied Printed Textiles at Winchester School of Art. Winchester is a small beautiful cathedral city and the art school had its own halls and campus so there was a real small arty community feel to the place. I had the best three years there.
What’s the proudest moment of your career to date? Well, up until recently it was my Keka Case deal commission but I’ve just found out that I’m going to be featured in Uppercase Magazine’s “Surface Design Guide” which will be distributed at Surtex! (A global B2B marketplace for original artworks and design).
Which design has been your career highlight? I graduated in 2012 so all my work is still very fresh. A highlight which comes to mind is a commission from a student costume designer to create a print for a character in an apocalyptic time.
Your smart phone cover prints are striking. How did the opportunity to design tech accessories for smart phones come about? The founder of Keka Cases contacted me last September with the opportunity. I was so thrilled that he had contacted me and I got to sign my first licensing contract.
Do you love or loathe social media? I’m a tech girl at heart and I love social media. It’s such great way to reach out and collaborate with people and I must admit I’ve been a lot more active now I have a blog
Which tools and tricks do you use to create your work? I usually start out with a mixed media drawing using inks and NeoColur WaterColour Crayons. I then scan my drawings play around with them in Photoshop to create my repeats. I've just got a new graphics tablet so I've been playing around with illustrator and digital illustration a lot more
Where do you find your unique inspiration in this modern day plethora of creativity? This is going to sound totally corny but actually I am inspired by my everyday life. I've been drawing a lot of flowers recently because my ‘pops’ buys flowers all the time. I'm inspired by movies, stories, books and exhibitions.
What’s your favourite music to work to? It depends on what I’m doing really. For sketching and drawing I like to work in silence but for monotonous things like preparing scanned artwork for digital manipulation I usually listen to movie soundtracks… (I do get distracted quite easily!)
What’s your favorite pair of shoes? I’ve got some Brogues from #Clarks that I loved so much that I went and bought a new pair once I'd worn out the first pair!
What do you spread on your toast in the morning? Jam, it always has to be jam.
